why is lip syncing important
Lip syncing is a convention in the majority of music videos, and involves the artiste or someone in the music video mouthing along to the lyrics, so when the actual song is played over the video in the editing process, it looks like the artiste is singing the song.
Lip synching is usually delivered with direct address (eye contact with audience) and this breaks the 4th wall with the audience, like the artiste is actually singing to the audience, this makes it feel more personal between the audience and the artiste, causing fans to spend more money on their idols. This is particularly the case with younger fan bases which are easier to influence, like One Direction etc.
Lip syncing in music videos, makes the artiste look more talented than they actually are, for example in Britney Speares's "Toxic" her heavily auto tuned voice juxtaposes with her natural live performance voice, which is mediocre at best, and this is a common criticism of lip syncing, as it is considerably misleading. Many artistes have come under fire for this, especially when they include lip syncing in their live performances, like the notorious example of Britney Speares at the VMA's in 2007. This is part of the movement which has occurred in the music industry, in which the brand image of the artiste/band matters more than the talent of them.
In my music video I will be using lip syncing to its full advantage. The specification of the coursework from AQA states that lip syncing is compulsory in order for my music video to be graded accordingly.
