merchandise

merchandise makes up a large amount of the revenue that artistes make.

This is mainly due to the fact that sales of actual music had decreased, due to the fact that consumers can now get access to songs for free, through watching videos on YouTube, and streaming for free on spotify, so the money received from sales of songs have declined. This has increased the focus on tours and merchandise.

For example, One Direction had lots of merchandise that fans would pay for, often north of £40 for a hoodie with a One Direction logo on it, and if a fan gets all the items, it can cost north of £200. This is especially important with fan bases, like that of One Direction, which had impressionable fan bases who would get their parents to buy the merchandise for them.

This essentially boils down down to the fans of the artistes  paying to advertise on their behalf, as when a band like One Direction released a hoodie with a One direction logo, the millions of fans who bought the merchandise, would expose the brand image to other impressionable teens, who may not have heard of the band before, thus the cycle continues.

This is an example of my merchandise, which will be sold on my website. This will be used to promote my music vide, and spread awareness to my music.
