I printed
off 25 copies off this questionnaire from a word document, and gave it round to
people at my school, including a few teachers. I also gave 2 to my parents.
This seemed like a decent sample size, so I would be able to get an average
result from each question. Overall, thi helped me significantly, with relating
to my target audience.
I asked
the question “What is your age” because I wanted to find out the demographics
of my audience, so I would know how the music video would suit them best.
Obviously the majority fell under the 16-24 category, but this is also the age
of Indie Rock’s target audience. With this question, I should have had access
to a wider range of age groups, as I wouldn’t have had such a biasedness, with
21 16-35 responses, 2 49-60 responses and 2 25-36 responses.
The next
question asked was “would you consider yourself a fan of indie rock? I asked
this question because I wanted to know if one age group was more familiar than
the other. This would mean I could change the music video to fit use, via the uses
and gratifications theory. Out of the 4 people I gave the questionnaire to, who
were over 24, only 1 said yes, and this suggests that the indie rock genre, is
more the younger generation, and so my music video should be clear in this,
with a vibrant and feel good atmosphere. I got 12 yes’s, which was actually
higher than expected, considering that Indie Rock is fairly unconventional, and
further reinforces the fact that the young generation like Indie style music.
What is your gender? Also helped me with reaching my target
audience. 15 of my questioannaire takers were male and 10 were female, and only
3 females said they were a fan of indie rock, compared with 8 males, which is a
much higher percentage. This means they may find the music video more
relatable, with a male teenager as the artiste.
I asked what product should be in my music video, regarding
product placement, and 11 people said a can of coke, compared to 8 saying an
iphone and 6 saying an apple mac. This means I will include coke as a product
placement, as mentioned in my “product placement” blog post.
With the next question, an overwhelming majority said that a
fast paced song should be reflected by equally fast paced editing, with 22 out
of 25. This made it clear to me that he music video should be fast and action
packed.
The typical features included in Indie rock got a variety of
responses, although many people didn’t kno what it was, which wasn’t surprising
considering the niche of the genre. The typical answers included lip synching,
a form of narrative, and dancing (no thanks), as well as it being unconventional,
compared to pop music videos. The performance aspect got answers like drum
kits, base guitars and acoustic guitars.
For the locations questions, no one wanted to see just one
location, as that may get fairly repetitive, 21 people said lots of locations, which
my music video will listen to, by going to places like my local woods, in and
around my house, and the beach, or just walking around my neighbourhood.
Again, the last question was also an overwhelming majority,
with 22 people saying they watched music videos on youtube. The 2 that didn’t
being my parent, and someone who uses another onlne video platform, whatever that
is?
