record company- Domino records

The Arctic Monkeys are signed to the British independent record company, Domino Records. This is fairly rare for such a well known band to be signed to an independent record company and not the oligopoly, which represent 70% of the music industry, with the conglomerates Sony, Universal and Warner being known as the "big 3".

The ownership of the Arctic monkeys being an independent record company is significant to the indie rock genre, as with independent labels there is less obligation for the band's music to change in order to reach chart success and sell more records, and it is fairly uncommon for indie rock music to be commercially successful, this means they can continue making the music their core audience want them to make.

Additionally, the Indie genre is fairly persistant with artistes sticking to their routes, not "selling out" from their fans, and an independent record label fits this idea . There is also a sense of "Britishness" in terms of the label being based in London, , and the majority of Domino's artists are from the uk.

Domino records deal with British indie bands, these include Franz Ferdinand, Blood Orange and Bob Moses. Often smaller record companies like Domino are better suited as despite the lower earnings the bands may get, they will be able to get in contact with their artistes quicker, and because independent record companies have a smaller range of artistes signed with them, it feels more personal and not overly corporate.

horizontal integration in the music industry is when record companies purchase other artists or record companies. An example of this was when Universal took over Stevie Wonder's record label, Motown

This idiffers to vertical integration when the company makes purchases to aid the stages of production, distribution and consumption, making supplying quicker and/or cheaper. for example purchasing their own vehicles to transport music to music shops, or Sony's stores which only stock Sony devices for music consumption.
